Also, it is important to note that some people suffering from cancer may not need to undergo more than one treatment procedure. Whereas some cancer patients need more than one treatment for an effective treatment.
Biomarker Testing for Cancer Treatment
Biomarkers or tumour markers help oncologists to diagnose and select the best treatment for the patient. Every cancer type has a distinct pattern of biomarkers. By studying these biomarkers Oncologists get a clear picture of the type of cancer and the treatment type that it needs.
Biomarker testing is also called tumour testing, tumour genetic testing, somatic testing, and molecular testing or molecular profiling. Sometimes they also determine what type of treatment option exactly fits certain cancers.
Chemotherapy
Oncologists use chemotherapy to kill or reduce the chance of cancer returning to a patient’s body. This procedure involves using drugs to kill or slow the growth of cancer cells. It can be used to treat cancer or ease cancer symptoms.
Hormone Therapy
Certain types of cancer cells use hormones to grow themselves. Those types of cancer cells can be treated or stopped from growing further by using Hormone therapy. Oncologists perform hormone therapy by influencing hormones in the patient’s body.
Common types of hormone therapy include Hormone replacement therapy (HRT), Androgen replacement therapy (ART), and more.
Hyperthermia
Oncologists perform hyperthermia, in which a particular body tissue in the patient’s body is heated to as high as 113 F to damage and kill cancer cells in that particular tissue. This procedure is carried out without causing any harm or damage to neighbouring tissues. This treatment is also called thermal therapy, thermal ablation, or thermotherapy.

Other common procedures neurosurgeons perform
Photodynamic Therapy
Photodynamic Therapy is also one of the common treatment types used to treat cancers. Oncologists use a drug in this procedure that is activated by a light photosensitizer. Once the drug is injected into the body, cancer cells absorb the drug within 24 to 74 hours. Cancer cells that absorb the photosensitizer are exposed to light. The light exposure makes the photosensitizer make a form of oxygen that kills cancer cells.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation Therapy involves using ionizing radiation as a part of cancer treatment to kill or control the growth of the cancer cells. In this procedure, the ionizing radiation damages the DNA of the cancerous cells leading to cancer cell death. At low doses, it can be used in X-rays to get a clear picture of the inside body of the patient like teeth or broken bones.
Surgery
Oncologists conduct surgeries when other procedures fail to treat cancers effectively. Kamineni Hospital is regarded as one of the best hospitals in delivering a wide range of surgeries. What facilities does Kamineni have for radiation therapy

Kamineni Hospital is one of the few radiation therapy centres in the city. It is well-equipped and managed by highly experienced physicians and specialized teams. Kamineni Hospitals has two major kinds of equipment for the delivery of radiation treatment:

  • Linear Accelerator for External Radiotherapy
  • MicroSelectron HDR for Brachytherapy
What is External Radiotherapy?

External radiotherapy can be administered as 2D conventional radiotherapy or 3D conformal radiotherapy and IMRT. The selection of therapy depends on the clinical profile of the patient, 3D conformal radiotherapy and IMRT are more advanced and frequently used.

Radiation oncologists chart out the course of treatment before delivering it. The patient is counseled in detail regarding the treatment, side effects and outcomes. Treatment plans vary as per the type and location of cancer and can last up to 7 weeks. In some cases, radiotherapy is given along with chemotherapy once a week (Intravenous or oral) as per the advice of the medical oncologist. Once the treatment is complete, the patient is counseled regarding diet, precautions, follow-up schedule and emergency detection.

How is Brachytherapy different from External Radiotherapy?

Brachytherapy is an advanced form of treatment. It is commonly used as an effective treatment for cervical, prostate, breast, and skin cancer among others. Brachytherapy involves placing a sealed radiation source inside or next to the area requiring treatment.

Brachytherapy is highly precise and ensures a high dose of radiation to be applied to a small area. As radiation sources remain accurately targeted, clinicians can achieve a high level of dose delivery. This enhances the efficacy of treatment and reduces risk.
