The ear starts paining at night. Can’t sleep on that side. Not sure if it’s the ear itself or something nearby sending pain there.
Ear pain isn’t usually an emergency. Most of it settles within 48 hours with the right home care. But the right care depends on what’s behind the pain and the thing most people reach for first, the cotton bud, usually makes things worse.
Our ENT team at Kamineni, an ENT hospital in Hyderabad, includes Dr. Ayyappa Swamy Amara, Dr. C. Anand Kumar, and Dr. Swetha who sees ear pain presentations every week. Backed by 34+ years of multispeciality care and NABH and NABL accreditation, here’s what actually helps and what to avoid.
What Usually Causes Ear Pain at Home?
Ear pain doesn’t always come from the ear itself and understanding what’s behind it is what makes the difference between a remedy that helps and one that does nothing.
- Middle ear infections are the most common cause, especially after a cold or throat infection. The pain sits deep inside, throbs, and can feel worse when lying down. Children get these more often than adults.
- Wax buildup causes a duller, more pressured ache. It often gets worse after a shower or swim, when water sits against the wax and swells it. This is also the situation where cotton buds cause the most damage.
- Eustachian tube blockage feels different, more like pressure, a blocked feeling, or a sense that the ear needs to pop. It usually comes with sinus congestion or a cold. The problem isn’t actually in the ear at all; it’s in the tube connecting the ear to the back of the throat.
- Swimmer’s ear affects the outer ear canal. The pain worsens when the ear is touched or pulled. And referred pain from a jaw problem, a tooth infection, or a sore throat can travel to the ear without anything being wrong in the ear itself.

6 Natural Remedies That Actually Work for Ear Pain
Not one-size-fits-all, each remedy works best for a specific cause, and matching it correctly is what makes the difference.
Warm Compress : Best For Infection Pain
A clean cloth soaked in warm water, wrung out, and held against the outer ear for 10 to 15 minutes eases the throbbing from a middle ear infection by improving blood flow and reducing inflammation. Warm, not hot.Â
Salt Sock : Best For Overnight Relief
Fill a clean cotton sock with a cup of coarse salt. Heat it on a dry pan for about five minutes until warm but comfortable to hold against the skin. Place it over the ear. Salt holds heat longer than a cloth and releases it slowly which makes this particularly useful when searching how to stop ear pain naturally at night.
Steam Inhalation : Best For Eustachian Tube Pressure
When the pain is a blocked, pressured feeling rather than a deep throb, the source is often the Eustachian tube not the ear itself. Steam from a bowl of hot water with a towel over the head loosens the mucus blocking that tube and lets the ear equalise. This works best when ear pain comes with a blocked nose or sinus congestion.
Olive Oil : Best For Wax Blockage
Two to three drops of slightly warmed olive oil at body temperature, not hot into the ear canal, softens hardened wax so it can move out on its own. Leave it for a few minutes, then tilt the head to let it drain. Don’t use this if there’s any discharge from the ear.
Ginger : Best For Inflammation
Fresh adrak juice applied around the outside of the ear reduces inflammation from infection. Gingerol, the active compound in ginger, is well-documented for its anti-inflammatory properties.
Sleep Position : For Night Pain
Lying flat increases pressure in the middle ear. Two pillows instead of one, with the painful ear facing up rather than pressed into the pillow, makes a measurable difference to nighttime pain.Â
What Not to Do When Your Ear Hurts?
Cotton buds don’t clean ears. They push wax deeper into the canal, which turns a minor buildup into a blocked, painful one. Wax-related ear pain seen in the best multispeciality hospital in Hyderabad often starts here.
Putting drops of any kind, oil, juice, solution into an ear with discharge is dangerous. Discharge may mean the eardrum has perforated. Anything going into the canal at that point can cause damage that makes the situation significantly worse.
Taking leftover antibiotics without a test is another common mistake. Ear pain is usually viral or mechanical, not bacterial. Antibiotics don’t help with either, and taking them unnecessarily builds resistance for when they’re actually needed.
When Should Ear Pain Send You to a Doctor?
Mild ear pain settles within 48 hours in most cases. If it hasn’t by then, or if any of the following appear at any point, an ENT assessment at an ENT hospital in Hyderabad is needed .
Severe pain that’s worsening rather than settling. Fever above 38.5°C alongside ear pain. Discharge or fluid from the ear. Sudden hearing loss in the affected ear. Dizziness or balance problems appearing alongside the pain. Any ear pain in an infant under two years. They’re signals the cause needs identifying.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does ear pain get worse at night?Â
Lying flat increases pressure in the middle ear, there’s nowhere for the fluid to drain. Two pillows and keeping the painful ear facing upward reduces that pressure.
Can I put oil in my ear for pain?Â
Warm olive oil works well for wax-related ear pain, two to three drops, body temperature, tilted in and drained after a few minutes. Don’t put any oil or drops into an ear that’s discharging fluid.Â
How long does ear pain usually last?Â
Mild ear pain from a cold, wax, or Eustachian tube pressure usually settles within 48 hours with home care. Middle ear infections can run three to five days. Pain that’s still going strong after 48 hours needs an ENT assessment.
