Historic Heart Transplant Success: Polio Survivor Receives New Lease on Life at Kamineni Hospital, Hyderabad.

Hyderabad, May 29, 2024: In a remarkable medical feat, Kamineni Hospital in LB Nagar, Hyderabad, has successfully performed the first-ever heart transplant on a polio survivor. The surgery, which took place on May 25th, 2024, has given a new lease on life to Bhaskar, a 45-year-old tailor from Khammam district, who had been suffering from severe heart disease exacerbated by his partial polio condition.

The transplant team, led by Dr. Vishal V. Khante, Head of the Heart Transplant Department and Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, and Dr. Rajesh Deshmukh, Consultant Heart Transplant and Cardiothoracic Surgeon, achieved this significant milestone, showcasing the hospital’s advanced medical capabilities and expertise in complex heart transplant procedures.

Bhaskar’s condition had led to irregular heartbeats and insufficient blood supply, causing a range of health complications, including extreme fatigue and confinement to bed. The five-hour surgery involved the meticulous removal of Bhaskar’s diseased heart, the implantation of a new heart donated by a brain-dead individual, and the precise reconnection of all blood vessels and valves.

“Following the successful surgery, Bhaskar is on the path to recovery and is gradually regaining his ability to engage in daily activities. Previously confined to bed due to extreme fatigue, he can now walk significant distances and looks forward to resuming his normal life,” said Dr. Vishal V. Khante. “However, post-surgery, Bhaskar requires intensive monitoring and ongoing medication to prevent organ rejection, and our team is constantly monitoring his condition.”

Dr. Gayatri Kamineni, COO of Kamineni Hospitals, expressed pride and humility in the achievement, highlighting the medical capabilities of the hospital. “I thank all the doctors, including Dr. Vishal Khante, Dr. Rajesh Deshmukh, Dr. Suresh Kumar Esampalli, Chief Cardiac Anaesthetist, and Dr. Ravali Sade, Consultant Anaesthetist, as well as the dedicated ICU staff and nursing team, for their crucial roles in this surgery.

Expressing his gratitude, Bhaskar credited the skilled doctors at Kamineni Hospital for giving him a new lease on life. He acknowledged that without their expertise and dedication, he would not have survived this ordeal. Bhaskar continues to follow the prescribed medical regimen and attends regular consultations.

This ground breaking heart transplant on a polio survivor is a testament to Kamineni Hospitals’ commitment to delivering cutting-edge medical care and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the field of transplant surgery.
