Essential Tips to Combat Viral Fevers This Monsoon Season by Kamineni Hospital

As the monsoon rains sweep across Hyderabad, we’re witnessing a surge in viral fever cases that’s affecting both children and adults alike. With Chikungunya, Dengue, and other viral infections on the rise, it’s crucial to arm ourselves with knowledge and preventive measures. We spoke to Dr. Srikrishna Raghavendra, Consultant General Physician at Kamineni Hospital, who shared valuable insights on staying healthy during this challenging season.

In the past two weeks alone, Kamineni Hospital has treated nearly 300 patients with various viral fevers. About half of these required hospitalization, while others were managed as outpatients. The symptoms typically include high fever, body aches, and severe limb pain.

Key Preventive Measures:

  • Stick to Home-Cooked Meals: Avoid outside food as much as possible.
  • Practice Thorough Hygiene: Wash fruits and vegetables carefully, and always wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds before eating.
  • Stay Home If Sick: If you suspect a viral infection, isolate yourself and avoid cooking for others.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially if you have a fever, to reduce nausea.
  • Keep Your Environment Clean: Use bleach and other cleaners to maintain hygiene at home.
  • Avoid Crowds and Wear a Mask: When going out, steer clear of crowded places and always wear a mask.
  • Consider Vaccinations: Seasonal vaccinations can offer additional protection.

Understanding Viral Fevers  Dr. Raghavendra emphasizes that Rotavirus and Norovirus are the primary culprits behind these viral outbreaks. He strongly advises against self-medication and recommends consulting a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. Different types of fevers require different treatments, and only appropriate testing can determine the specific virus causing the illness.
The Spread Factor
One of the most concerning aspects of these viral fevers is their rapid spread. A single infected person can potentially spread the virus to 10-15 others before it’s even detected. This underscores the importance of wearing masks and maintaining personal hygiene.

A Shift in Demographics
Interestingly, while viral fevers traditionally affected children more, the past few years have seen an increase in adult cases as well. This shift highlights the need for everyone, regardless of age, to take precautions.

Environmental Factors
Stagnant and contaminated water serve as breeding grounds for these viruses. As long as the rainy season persists, it’s crucial to be vigilant about what we consume and where we go.

Final Thoughts
As we navigate through this tricky season, remember that prevention is always better than cure. By following these simple yet effective measures, we can significantly reduce our risk of falling prey to viral fevers. Stay safe, stay healthy!
