Kamineni Doctors Raise Alarm Over Rising Childhood Cancer Cases in India
Childhood cancer is on the rise, with 50,000–75,000 new cases reported every year in India and over 4 lakh worldwide. During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, doctors at Kamineni Hospital, LB Nagar, highlighted the urgent need for early detection and timely treatment.
Dr. Annie Q. Hasan, Head of Genetics and Molecular Medicine, explained that leukemia, lymphoma and brain tumours are the most common cancers in children. Some genetic conditions and mutations increase risk, making genetic counselling and testing crucial for early diagnosis.
Consultant Pediatrician Dr. Kanchan S. Channawar added that cancers can even begin forming before birth and parents should watch for symptoms like persistent fever, weight loss, joint pain, swollen nodes, headaches or pale skin.
Medical Oncologist Dr. S. Jayanthi noted that nearly 5% of pediatric cancers in India come from the Telugu states and encouraged parents to seek immediate medical advice. Early detection greatly improves recovery chances.
